Travel Advice: Tunisia – Feb 2012

Most visits to Tunisia are trouble-free, but all travellers should be aware of the current political and security situation, restrictions imposed, and the impact of the situation in neighbouring Libya.
Tunisia is no longer experiencing the widespread unrest that occurred during the events of January 2011 and most visits are trouble-free. Public order is maintained in most places, including the main tourist coastal areas, but all travellers should be aware that spontaneous and unpredictable events such as political and industrial protests still occur throughout the country. While most forms of protest pass without incident we recommend that British nationals avoid all forms of demonstration. Foreigners have not been targeted but there is a risk of incidental violence if you are caught up in an event that does not pass peacefully. A State of Emergency still exists and curfews or other temporary movement restrictions may be imposed or changed with little or no notice. You should observe instructions given by local security authorities and/or your tour operator and are advised to carry a copy of your passport, or other form of photo ID, at all times as proof of nationality and identity.

Travel Advice: Japan – Feb 2012

Typhoon season runs from June to December. The Japan Meteorological Agency provides information and forecasts (in English) about approaching storms. See Natural Disasters – Typhoons for further information.
We advise against all but essential travel to those areas in north-east Japan most affected by the 11 March earthquake and tsunami. This includes those coastal areas of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures which suffered extensive damage. These areas continue to experience disruptions to residential, business and transport infrastructure. There is also a continuing risk of aftershocks. If your travel is essential, you should consult local contacts before travelling.
We advise against all travel within a 20km radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and the additional exclusion zones outside this 20km radius identified by the Japanese authorities as shown on thismap. This advice is based on guidance from UK Government scientists. For areas outside those subject to restrictions, out to 60 km from the facility, we advise that you exercise a high degree of caution at all times by consulting relevant information on the local situation and by following the advice of the Japanese authorities.

Travel Advice: Egypt – Feb 2012

We advise against all but essential travel to Sinai north of the Suez-Taba road. This advice does not apply to the towns of Suez or Taba. This advice is due to the significant increase in the risk of criminal activity in the North Sinai area.
There are frequent large-scale demonstrations, often on Fridays, in Tahrir Square, Cairo. Demonstrations also often take place elsewhere in Cairo, as well as other cities in Egypt, including Alexandria.
Protestors remain in Tahrir Square in Cairo although vehicle access is not currently restricted. Mohammed Mahmoud and Shaikh Rihan Streets both remain blocked off and Qasr al Aini is also blocked near Tahrir Square. There is an increased risk of transport delays due to traffic congestion around central Cairo.
British nationals should avoid all crowds and demonstrations. The situation can change rapidly and we recommend that you follow events on local and international news and seek advice from tour operators and local authorities.
There have been two incidents in February 2012 of kidnappings of foreign tourists by armed tribesmen on the road between Dahab and St Catherine’s in Sinai. Both groups were released unharmed within hours. You should exercise caution when travelling outside resorts in the Sinai and take advice from local security authorities and your tour operator.
The Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza is open daily from 09:00 – 17:00 except Fridays and public holidays, but is subject to closure at short notice. The Rafah border crossing is in North Sinai and we advise against all but essential travel to this area.

There is a high threat from terrorism throughout Egypt, including in Sinai. Security is tight throughout the country, especially in resort areas. There is a high risk of indiscriminate attacks including public places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers, including but not limited to resorts, hotels and restaurants.
