Supply and demand- the school holiday price debate continues

Once again the issue of higher holiday prices during school holiday periods has hit the headlines. As has always been the case, both overseas and UK holiday prices tend to reach their peak during these periods and understandably there seems to be a swathe of public opinion that sees this as ‘profiteering’.

The usual suggestion of staggering school holidays across the country arises, but is just as quickly deemed to be unworkable by those ‘in the know’. This group usually includes teachers who are of course affected in exactly the same way by higher holiday costs.

Unfortunately supply and demand come into play and whilst an ideal world would make for a more even spread of pricing across the year, the reality is that like flowers on Valentine’s Day, restaurants on Christmas Day and New Year’s eve nights in hotels, peak time pricing is likely to remain.
